Peptide Glossary
Clear, plain-English definitions for the terms you’ll encounter in peptide research.
Peptide research comes with its own vocabulary. This glossary explains common peptide, laboratory, pharmacology, and research terms in clear, straightforward language.
A
Agonist
A substance that binds to a receptor and activates it, causing a biological response. A simple way to think about it is a key that fits into a lock and turns it on.
Amino Acid
One of the small molecular building blocks used to make peptides and proteins. Peptides are formed when amino acids are connected together in a chain.
Analog
A compound that is structurally similar to another compound but has been modified in some way. Researchers may study peptide analogs to investigate differences in stability, receptor activity, or other properties.
Antagonist
A substance that binds to a receptor but blocks or reduces its activation. If an agonist turns a receptor on, an antagonist generally prevents that activation.
B
Bioactivity
The ability of a substance to produce an effect in a biological system. Researchers may evaluate bioactivity to understand how strongly or effectively a compound interacts with cells, receptors, enzymes, or other biological targets.
Bioavailability
The proportion of a substance that reaches circulation or its intended biological destination in an available form. Bioavailability can vary depending on how a compound is administered and how it is absorbed and processed.
Biomarker
A measurable biological characteristic used to evaluate a biological process or response. Examples can include certain proteins, hormones, enzymes, or other measurable signals.
C
Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A laboratory document reporting analytical information about a tested sample. Depending on the testing performed, a COA may include information such as identity, purity, test methods, and laboratory results.
Chain Length
The number of amino acids connected together in a peptide chain. Chain length is one characteristic researchers use when describing and classifying peptides.
Clinical Trial
A research study conducted in human participants to evaluate an intervention. Clinical trials are typically conducted in phases and may examine factors such as safety, dosage, effectiveness, and adverse effects.
Compound
A substance made from two or more chemical elements that are chemically bonded together. In research literature, the word is also commonly used as a general term for a substance being investigated.
D
Degradation
The process by which a compound breaks down or changes over time. Factors such as temperature, light, moisture, enzymes, and storage conditions can affect degradation.
Dose-Response Relationship
The relationship between the amount of a substance and the biological response observed. Researchers use dose-response data to study how changes in exposure relate to changes in effect.
E
Efficacy
The ability of an intervention or compound to produce a particular effect under defined conditions. In simple terms, efficacy asks how well something works in the setting being studied.
Enzyme
A biological molecule that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Enzymes play essential roles in metabolism, digestion, signaling, and many other biological processes.
F
First-in-Human Study
The first clinical study in which an investigational compound is administered to human participants. These studies generally focus heavily on safety, tolerability, and how the compound behaves in the body.
G
GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1)
A naturally occurring peptide hormone involved in several metabolic processes, including glucose-dependent insulin secretion, glucagon regulation, gastric emptying, and appetite signaling. GLP-1 receptors are widely studied in metabolic research.
GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide)
A naturally occurring hormone released in response to nutrients. It participates in glucose regulation and insulin signaling and is frequently studied alongside GLP-1 in metabolic research.
H
Half-Life
The amount of time required for the concentration or amount of a substance to decrease by half. Researchers use half-life to help describe how long a compound remains present in a biological system.
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)
An analytical laboratory technique used to separate, identify, and measure components within a sample. HPLC is commonly used in peptide analysis, including assessments related to purity.
Hormone
A chemical messenger produced in the body that travels to target cells or tissues and helps regulate biological functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and stress responses.
I
In Vitro
Research performed outside a living organism, typically using cells, tissues, or biological molecules in a controlled laboratory environment. The phrase literally means “in glass.”
In Vivo
Research performed within a living organism. In vivo studies can help researchers understand biological effects that may not be apparent in isolated cells or laboratory systems.
Investigational Compound
A substance being studied to better understand its properties, biological activity, safety, or potential applications. An investigational compound has not necessarily been approved for medical use.
L
Ligand
A molecule that binds to another molecule, often a receptor. Ligands can activate a receptor, block it, or influence its activity in other ways.
Lyophilization
A freeze-drying process used to remove water from a substance. Peptides are often supplied in lyophilized form because removing water can improve stability during storage.
Lyophilized Powder
A dry material produced through freeze-drying. The process removes water under controlled conditions, leaving a dry product that can be more stable than the same material in solution.
M
Mass Spectrometry
An analytical technique that measures molecules based on their mass-to-charge ratio. In peptide research, mass spectrometry can help identify a compound and characterize its molecular composition.
Mechanism of Action
The biological process through which a substance produces an effect. It describes what the compound interacts with and what happens as a result of that interaction.
Metabolism
The collection of chemical processes that occur within a living organism. The term can also describe how the body chemically processes and breaks down a particular substance.
Molecular Weight
The mass of a molecule based on the atoms that make it up. Molecular weight is one of the basic characteristics used to identify and describe peptides and other compounds.
N
Nonclinical Research
Research conducted before or outside human clinical trials. It can include laboratory experiments, cell-based studies, animal studies, and other research used to investigate a compound’s characteristics and biological effects.
O
Off-Target Effect
An effect caused when a compound interacts with something other than its intended biological target. Researchers study off-target activity because it can influence a compound’s overall biological effects.
P
Peptide
A molecule made from a chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Peptides occur naturally throughout biology and can function as signaling molecules, hormones, structural components, and more.
Peptide Bond
The chemical bond that connects one amino acid to another. A series of these bonds creates the amino acid chain that forms a peptide or protein.
Pharmacodynamics (PD)
The study of what a compound does to a biological system. Pharmacodynamics examines the relationship between exposure to a compound and the biological effects that follow.
Pharmacokinetics (PK)
The study of what happens to a compound after it enters a biological system, including how it is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated.
Preclinical Research
Laboratory and other nonclinical research conducted before a compound advances into human clinical testing. It may include cell studies, animal models, pharmacology, and toxicology research.
Purity
A measure of how much of a tested sample consists of the intended compound relative to detectable impurities or related substances under the analytical method used.
R
Receptor
A biological structure, usually a protein, that recognizes and binds particular molecules. Receptors act somewhat like molecular switches, allowing signals outside or inside a cell to influence cellular activity.
Receptor Agonist
A substance that binds to a receptor and activates it. Different agonists can vary in how strongly they activate a receptor and the biological responses they produce.
Research Use Only (RUO)
A designation indicating that a product is intended for laboratory or research purposes rather than use as an approved drug, food, cosmetic, or treatment for humans or animals.
S
Sequence
The specific order of amino acids in a peptide or protein. Even small changes in sequence can affect a molecule’s shape, stability, receptor interactions, and biological activity.
Stability
The ability of a compound to maintain its chemical and physical characteristics over time. Temperature, light, moisture, pH, and other environmental conditions can affect stability.
T
Target
A biological molecule or structure that a compound interacts with. Common biological targets include receptors, enzymes, proteins, and signaling pathways.
Toxicology
The scientific study of the harmful effects substances can have on biological systems. Toxicology research helps characterize potential risks and how those risks may change with exposure.
V
Vehicle
A substance or mixture used to carry or deliver another compound in an experiment. Researchers may use a vehicle control to distinguish the effects of the compound being studied from the effects of the vehicle itself.
